Emerging into its current James Island locale from a hole-in-the-wall
West Ashley joint just three years ago, the Charleston Pour House has
quickly earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the premiere live
music venues in the Southeast. It's evident that owners Alex and
Vanessa Harris are realizing their dream, attested by the consistent
and uncompromisingly great lineup of national and regional acts they
book. From Leon Russell to the North Mississippi All-Stars, Toubab
Krewe to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the music is clearly their first
priority. The impeccable sound and consistently enthusiastic
response of Pour House audiences make it a favorite stop for the
performers as well.
But the Pour House hasn't sacrificed amenities or atmosphere for its
strong schedule. Adjacent to the main stage room is the cozy Cuban-
themed El Bohio, complete with ample tables and a full bar. The menu
shows off Vanessa's Cuban roots with a generous menu of specialty
entrees, sandwiches, and delicious appetizers from our island
neighbor to the south. Or step out back, where a newly renovated
wooden deck showcases acoustic musicians in the afternoon on an
outside stage, and a third full bar assures you'll never have to
shoulder your way to a beer or cocktail.
Visit El Bohio for lunch, or stop in for dinner and stick around for
a show. There's virtually never a bad night at the Pour House,
whether your musical tastes lean toward jazz, rock, bluegrass, or
freeform improvisation. With a line-up that's often stacked seven
nights a week, there's always an excuse to cut a rug at the grooviest
dance floor in Chucktown.
